Overview
LGND Sapphire CO2 Bubble Counter provides a clear and convenient way to monitor the rate at which CO2 is being delivered to a planted aquarium. Individual bubbles passing through the transparent chamber can be counted easily, allowing the CO2 flow to be adjusted gradually and accurately.
Its clear glass body and distinctive sapphire-blue internal nozzle combine precise functionality with a clean, discreet appearance. Installed inline between the CO2 regulator and diffuser, the bubble counter provides a consistent visual reference for monitoring changes in gas delivery.
For the best visibility and reduced maintenance, we recommend using LGND Bubble Counter Liquid. Its specialised formulation resists evaporation for considerably longer than water, reduces the need for frequent refilling and creates a clear contrast around each bubble for more accurate CO2 adjustment.
Directions
Rinse the glass bubble counter with warm water before first use. Fill the chamber with enough LGND Bubble Counter Liquid to completely cover the sapphire-blue internal nozzle while leaving sufficient empty space above the liquid for the bubbles to remain clearly visible.
LGND Bubble Counter Liquid is recommended instead of water because it significantly reduces evaporation, requires less frequent maintenance and improves bubble visibility, making the CO2 delivery rate easier to observe and adjust accurately.
Attach LGND CO2 Hose PRO 4/6mm to both glass connections. To attach the tubing, wet the inside of the tubing with water at the connection point and carefully slide it over the glass. The use of oils or other lubricants is not recommended, as these may cause the tubing to slide off the glass too easily.
To avoid breakage when removing the tubing, do not pull or twist it from the glass connection. Instead, carefully cut the tubing lengthwise along the attachment point to release the glassware.
Install the bubble counter upright and outside the aquarium. Connect the lower inlet to the CO2 regulator or check valve and connect the upper outlet to the tubing leading towards the diffuser. For protection against aquarium water backflow, install an LGND Sapphire Glass Check Valve inline between the CO2 regulator and bubble counter.
Once the bubble counter is securely installed, slowly turn on the CO2 supply. Observe the bubbles passing through the liquid and adjust the regulator to the desired flow rate. Make adjustments gradually and allow the aquarium sufficient time to respond before increasing the CO2 supply further.

What does a CO2 bubble counter measure?
The bubble counter provides a visual indication of the rate at which CO2 is entering the aquarium system. Counting the bubbles per second makes it easier to record and reproduce a chosen regulator setting.
Does the bubble count show the exact concentration of CO2 in the aquarium?
No. Bubble count is a relative measure of gas delivery and does not directly indicate the concentration of dissolved CO2 in the aquarium. The actual concentration will also depend on aquarium volume, water movement, diffuser efficiency, plant uptake and surface agitation.
Why should I use LGND Bubble Counter Liquid instead of water?
LGND Bubble Counter Liquid is formulated to resist evaporation for much longer than water. This reduces the need for frequent refilling and improves the visibility and definition of individual bubbles, allowing the CO2 flow rate to be adjusted more precisely.
How much liquid should I add?
Add enough liquid to fully submerge the sapphire-blue internal nozzle while leaving a clear air space above the liquid. The chamber should not be filled completely, as sufficient space is required for the individual bubbles to form and remain visible.
Which way should the bubble counter be installed?
Install it vertically, with CO2 entering through the lower connection and exiting through the upper connection towards the diffuser.
Where should the bubble counter be positioned?
Position it upright outside the aquarium in a secure and easily visible location. It should be installed between the regulator or check valve and the CO2 diffuser.
Does the bubble counter replace a check valve?
No. A bubble counter is designed to display the CO2 flow rate and should not be relied upon to prevent water backflow. A separate non-return valve, such as the LGND Sapphire Glass Check Valve, should be installed inline outside the aquarium.
Why are no bubbles appearing inside the chamber?
Confirm that the CO2 cylinder is open, the regulator is supplying sufficient working pressure and the bubble counter is installed in the correct direction. Check the tubing for kinks, loose connections or leaks, and inspect the diffuser for blockage.
How often should the liquid be replaced?
Replacement frequency depends on temperature, operating conditions and the liquid being used. LGND Bubble Counter Liquid evaporates considerably more slowly than water and normally requires only occasional topping up or replacement.
How should the bubble counter be cleaned?
Turn off and depressurise the CO2 system before removing the bubble counter. Rinse it carefully with warm water and avoid abrasive tools that could scratch or damage the glass. Allow it to dry or refill it with fresh LGND Bubble Counter Liquid before reinstalling.
Safety
LGND Sapphire CO2 Bubble Counter is made from glass and must be handled carefully. Do not use it if the glass is cracked, chipped or otherwise damaged.
Always turn off and fully depressurise the CO2 system before installing, removing, filling or cleaning the bubble counter. Never pull, twist or bend the glass connections when attaching or removing tubing.
Install the bubble counter outside the aquarium in a secure upright position where it cannot be knocked, dropped or placed under mechanical strain. Ensure all tubing connections are secure before restoring the CO2 supply.
Always use a suitable aquarium CO2 regulator and remain within the operating limits of all connected equipment. Excessive CO2 can be harmful to fish and other aquatic animals, so increase the flow gradually and monitor aquarium inhabitants closely.
