Overview

LGND Eclipse UV™ 500 is a compact internal aquarium filter that combines mechanical filtration and UV-C sterilisation in a single space-saving unit. Designed for freshwater aquariums, it continuously circulates water through a filtration chamber while exposing suspended microorganisms to ultraviolet light. This dual-action process helps improve water clarity, reduce free-floating algae, and lower the concentration of waterborne contaminants without the use of chemical treatments. UV sterilisation is widely used in aquarium systems to help control green water, reduce suspended bacteria, and improve overall water quality while leaving established biological filtration largely unaffected.

The adjustable flow design allows the filter to adapt to different aquarium layouts and stocking levels, providing efficient circulation while maintaining a clean and uncluttered appearance inside the aquarium. The integrated UV-C system operates within a protected chamber where water passes close to the lamp, helping maximise exposure time and treatment efficiency. When used as part of a complete aquarium maintenance routine, Eclipse UV™ 500 contributes to clearer water, improved visibility, and a healthier aquatic environment for fish and plants.

Water Cycle Diagram

Water enters the lower intake section where larger particles and suspended waste are trapped by the mechanical filter sponge. The filtered water then passes through the internal UV sterilization chamber containing the 5W UV-C lamp housed within a protective quartz glass sleeve. Exposure to ultraviolet light helps reduce free-floating microorganisms and algae spores before the water is returned to the aquarium through the adjustable outlet.

The integrated venturi system can also draw air into the water stream, increasing surface agitation and promoting oxygen exchange when additional aeration is required.

Step 1 – Disconnect the Filter

Disconnect the LGND Eclipse UV™ 500 from the mains power supply before performing any maintenance. Remove the filter from the aquarium if necessary and place it on a clean, dry surface.

Step 2 – Remove the Motor Unit

Firmly hold the lower filter housing with one hand while pulling the motor head vertically upward. Separate the motor assembly carefully without twisting excessively.

Step 3 – Remove the Filter Sponge

Lift the filter sponge from the lower housing. If cleaning only, rinse the sponge using aquarium water removed during a routine water change to preserve beneficial nitrifying bacteria. If the sponge has deteriorated or no longer retains its shape, replace it with a new sponge of the same specification.

Step 4 – Reinstall the Motor Unit

After cleaning or replacing the sponge, reinstall it into the filter housing and slide the motor unit back into position until fully seated.

Step 5 – Remove the Quartz Sleeve Retaining Cap

Rotate the retaining cap counter-clockwise until it is completely released. Do not apply excessive force. The cap secures the quartz sleeve that protects the UV lamp.

Step 6 – Carefully Remove the Quartz Sleeve

Slowly withdraw the quartz glass sleeve from the sterilisation chamber while supporting it with both hands. Inspect the sleeve for mineral deposits, algae accumulation or cracks. Clean only with a soft cloth and a suitable descaling solution if necessary.

Step 7 – Remove the UV-C Lamp

Carefully pull the UV-C lamp straight from its socket. Avoid twisting or applying sideways pressure to the lamp or connector.

Step 8 – Install the New UV Lamp

Insert a compatible 6 Watt UV-C lamp fully into the socket until securely seated. Always replace the lamp with the correct specification to maintain optimum sterilisation performance.

Step 9 – Reinstall the Quartz Sleeve

Carefully slide the cleaned quartz sleeve back into the chamber until it is fully seated over the UV lamp. Ensure the sleeve is correctly aligned before continuing.

Step 10 – Reinstall the Retaining Cap

Screw the retaining cap clockwise until fully tightened by hand. Do not overtighten. Once assembled, reinstall the filter in the aquarium and reconnect the power supply.

Important Safety Notes

  • Always disconnect the filter from the electrical supply before servicing.
  • Never operate the UV-C lamp outside the quartz sleeve or filter housing.
  • Direct exposure to UV-C radiation may cause serious eye and skin injury.
  • Handle the quartz sleeve carefully. It is manufactured from heat-resistant glass and may break if dropped or subjected to impact.
  • Replace any cracked or damaged quartz sleeve immediately.
  • Never clean the filter sponge using tap water, detergents or chemical cleaners. Always rinse biological media only in aquarium water.
  • Ensure every component is correctly reassembled before reconnecting the power supply to prevent leaks and maintain proper operation.

The filter sponge should be inspected every 2–4 weeks, depending on aquarium stocking density and feeding levels. Cleaning the sponge regularly maintains optimum water flow while preserving the biological bacteria responsible for natural filtration.

The quartz sleeve should be cleaned whenever mineral deposits or algae reduce UV transmission. For maximum sterilisation efficiency, the 6 W UV-C lamp should normally be replaced every 6–12 months, depending on operating hours.

Routine maintenance ensures the LGND Eclipse UV™ 500 continues to deliver efficient mechanical filtration, biological filtration and effective UV sterilisation for consistently clear, healthy aquarium water.

FAQ
What does the UV-C steriliser do?

The UV-C lamp exposes passing water to ultraviolet radiation that disrupts the reproductive capability of suspended algae, bacteria, and other microorganisms. This helps improve water clarity and can reduce the spread of certain waterborne contaminants. UV sterilisation affects only organisms that pass through the unit and does not treat algae attached to glass, rocks, or decorations.

Will Eclipse UV 500 make cloudy water clear?

In many cases, yes. UV sterilisation is particularly effective against green water and certain bacterial blooms that cause cloudy conditions. Results depend on water quality, flow rate, and the underlying cause of the cloudiness.

Does the UV system harm beneficial bacteria?

Beneficial nitrifying bacteria primarily live on filter media, substrate, and hard surfaces rather than floating freely in the water column. As a result, UV sterilisation generally has minimal impact on established biological filtration.

Can this filter replace regular aquarium maintenance?

No. Eclipse UV™ 500 is designed to complement normal aquarium care. Regular water changes, substrate cleaning, filter maintenance, and proper stocking practices remain essential for long-term aquarium health.

Is the filter suitable for planted aquariums?

Yes. The UV-C light is contained within the filter housing and does not directly affect aquatic plants. The unit can be used in planted aquariums where improved water clarity and circulation are desired.

Safety

Always disconnect the power supply before installing, removing, cleaning, or servicing the filter. The unit is intended for fully submerged operation only and must never be operated outside water. UV-C radiation can be harmful to eyes and skin if directly exposed; therefore, the sterilisation chamber should never be opened or modified while the unit is connected to power.

Ensure the filter is securely mounted before operation and verify that the power cable forms a drip loop below the electrical outlet to prevent water from travelling toward the socket. Do not use the filter if the housing, cable, plug, or UV components show signs of damage. Keep the unit out of reach of children and use only for aquarium applications.

Regularly inspect the intake area for obstructions and clean accumulated debris to maintain optimal flow and sterilisation performance. Replace UV components according to maintenance recommendations to ensure continued effectiveness.
