Overview
SunSun YBF-500 is an advanced hang-on-back filtration system that combines the convenience of a traditional external hanging filter with the performance of a compact canister filter. Designed for freshwater aquariums, planted aquascapes, shrimp aquariums, and community fish tanks, the YBF-500 integrates mechanical, biological, and chemical filtration within a compact external housing while occupying minimal space inside the aquarium.
A key feature of the system is the integrated floating surface skimmer, which continuously removes protein films, oils, and floating debris from the water surface. This improves gas exchange, enhances oxygen availability, and helps maintain crystal-clear water conditions. The adjustable intake assembly simultaneously draws water from both the aquarium surface and lower water column, ensuring complete circulation throughout the aquarium.
The YBF-500 also incorporates a stainless-steel pre-filtration chamber and a dedicated waste separation system that helps trap heavier debris before it reaches the primary filter media. This design reduces maintenance frequency while improving biological filtration stability. Combined with multiple media baskets, adjustable flow control, and a convenient bottom discharge valve, the YBF-500 delivers efficient filtration performance suitable for aquariums up to approximately 120–130 litres.

Install the filter securely on the aquarium glass using the supplied mounting bracket. Adjust the telescopic intake assembly to the desired height and attach the floating skimmer assembly. Fill the filter body completely with aquarium water through the water filling port before connecting power. Once primed, switch on the unit and adjust the flow rate as required.
Arrange filtration media from coarse mechanical filtration through to biological and chemical media. The supplied filter pads should be rinsed periodically using aquarium water to preserve beneficial bacterial colonies. Biological media should only be cleaned when necessary and should never be completely replaced at the same time.
The integrated waste discharge system may be opened periodically to remove accumulated debris from the collection chamber without dismantling the entire filter. Regular cleaning of the floating skimmer and intake components will ensure optimal flow and surface cleaning performance.
